Australia’s Springfield City Group looking to create defence opportunities
25 May 2022
Australia’s Springfield City Group announced it will initiate discussions with the Department of Defence to create opportunities for Amberley Air Force Base in regard to strategic land holdings and future land use options.
Jim Varghese, Executive Director, Springfield City Group said: “The planned upgrades at Amberley provide an important opportunity for major stakeholders in the vicinity to work closely with Defence in terms of support facilities, housing, off-site administration, research, IT and critical technologies. We are committed to working with government to ensure we play our part in enhancing Amberley’s capabilities and to support future requirements, which do not have to be located with the confines of the base. This is a chance to examine the future needs of the defence industry and, where feasible, to incorporate these requirements into our future plans. Springfield City Group has an outstanding track record of combining with strategic partners, including government, to deliver excellent outcomes.”
Greater Springfield is the only master-planned city other than Canberra and is within close proximity to the base and is a key support hub. Greater Springfield provides convenient access to the Brisbane CBD, airport and the Port of Brisbane. Canberra’s Brindabella Park project and Adelaide’s Mawson Lakes precinct provide a blueprint for offsite Defence-based operations and supporting capabilities. Greater Springfield has the necessary infrastructure, evolving Defence ecosystem and population demographic to support Defence and Defence Industry in establishing a similar Defence-focused facility and excellence hub.
