Australia joins declaration on safe and responsible artificial intelligence in the military
3 NOVEMBER 2023
Australia is strengthening its commitment to safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI), joining a landmark Declaration on Responsible Military Use of Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy.
In an increasingly complex global environment, it is essential that AI technologies are developed and implemented responsibly.
The Declaration, an initiative of the United States, sets out practical measures to safeguard the way AI is used by militaries. It calls on states to take steps to ensure military use of AI is consistent with obligations under international and humanitarian law, involves adequate training and employs appropriate safeguards.
This week, Deputy Prime Minister, Richard Marles, and Minister for Industry and Science, Ed Husic, are attending the United Kingdom’s AI Safety Summit from 1-2 November.
Australia’s participation reflects the Albanese Government’s strong record of contributing to the safe and responsible use of AI, including through joint initiatives between government, industry and academia.
Australia will continue to work with our international partners to ensure future developments in AI are in line with these principles.
