L3Harris, IAI-ELTA Systems partner to deliver threat detection and response solutions for ADF vehicles

23 December 2022

The pair have entered a teaming agreement for the delivery of fire detection and response solutions for use onboard the Australian Defence Force’s armoured fighting vehicles.

The solution is hoped to enable Australian combat vehicles to detect incoming rounds, where it can then undertake self-defence responses.

The locally developed vehicle protection system will include electronic warfare and kinetic capabilities, enabling the vehicle to protect itself against an attack.

Expected to be manufactured in Brisbane, the systems are designed to be “intuitive” for Australian warfighters to employ in the battlespace, according to Sarah Earey, managing director of intelligence and cyber international – APAC at L3Harris.

“Manufactured by L3Harris Micreo in Brisbane, the system sensors are easily deployed and integrated onto any vehicle. They will not only rapidly detect live fires but will be intuitive for operators in any battlespace to employ,” she said.

The solution includes tactical sensors developed by ELTA, including the company’s StormGuard Tactical Multi-mission Radar System, Othello Optical Threat Locator and Othello-P Opto-Acoustic Hostile Fire Location System.

Both companies hope to leverage their respective expertise in the field and deliver an advanced capability to the ADF.

“Together, IAI and L3Harris have a superior combined knowledge and capability in this field. Further trials are ongoing with very positive reports, so we are confident that the full system will meet the local requirements,” Zvi Yarom, IAI-ELTA’s vice president and general manager, Land Systems, said.

L3Harris and ELTA have partnered to deliver defence solutions for a decade.
