Landing Craft Australia visits WA company Bossong Engineering

23 August 22

Landing Craft Australia (LCA), a joint venture between Navantia Australia and UGL, recently visited Bossong Engineering’s Welshpool facilities where pre-production of sections may take place if LCA is successful in its bid to deliver the Australian Army’s future littoral manoeuvre capability.

As one of Australia’s leading engineering companies, Bossong Engineering can leverage its advanced manufacturing systems, high standards of quality, and stringent processes and procedures to service the Defence Industry. Bossong has extensive fabrication experience with quenched and tempered steel plate with relevant weld procedures and methods working with armoured plates.

Bossong Director, Paul Bossong, said that the company welcomes the opportunity presented by LCA to enter the Defence Maritime sector outside of subsea projects. “The longevity of the LAND 8710 Phase 1 project and the ability to partner with LCA is highly attractive to Bossong,” said Bossong. “Through our partnership with Landing Craft Australia we intend to continue to expand our technologies, keeping Australia at the forefront of the advanced manufacturing industry.”

Bossong’s relationship with LCA co-founder, UGL, spans more than ten years through its support of rail and other complex manufacturing projects. “Providing opportunities to expand and deepen Australia’s industry involvement and by bringing innovative Australian companies into the sovereign Defence supply chain, creates local manufacturing jobs and expands skills. These are key objectives for LCA,” said UGL’s General Manager of Defence, Terry Nichols.

The company’s management systems, use of robots, and seven-day per week operations provide it with the ability to work innovatively, responsively to precise standards, and to deliver high-volume, high-quality weld production. Bossong’s focus on high quality work, cost saving innovations, customer service, and reliability has resulted in continuous growth at both its Welshpool and Broome operations.

Navantia Australia’s Managing Director, Israel Lozano, said the visit to Bossong highlights the enormous potential the Australian and Western Australian industry has for future projects. “It is clear recognition of the impressive reputation that Bossong has earned over a long period as a reliable supplier to sophisticated industries such as oil and gas, mining, transport, subsea, and infrastructure,” said Lozano. “This expertise translates well to meet the challenging and unique requirements of the Defence Industry.”

LCA brings together the core capabilities and resources required to successfully deliver the LMV-M capability to the Commonwealth of Australia. LCA is bidding for LAND 8710 Phase 1 – Littoral Manoeuvre Vessel – Medium to deliver Australian designed and built vessels for the Australian Army. Navantia Australia and UGL worked together to successfully deliver the LLC upgrades in 2019, winning the 2020 Essington Lewis Award for Minor Sustainment Activity.
